Bio
Curriculum Vitae – Summary Statement
In the course of my professional career, I have always combined the design practice with that of research and I have considered teaching a fundamental opportunity for discussion, debate and sharing of ideas about the city, its space and those who live there.
Along this trajectory design has been an opportunity to verify an idea of space that faces problems, needs and aspirations of the complex contemporary society. Research has always been a way to establish a dialogue and a chance to learn from other experiences.
From this perspective, the relationship between architecture and context is an essential element in defining the qualities of the built environment: the urban scale, its anthropic, cultural and geographical characteristics have always played a fundamental role in structuring a design trajectory.
In more than 10 years of academic and professional practice in Italy, I have been able to study and deepen these concepts working as adjunct professor at the School of Architecture of the Politecnico di Milano, winning and being awarded with special mentions in architectural and urban design competitions. In that period I’ve had the opportunity to travel, organise seminars and workshops in many international universities.
I, nevertheless, felt the need to test myself in a different context and I moved to South Africa where I served as Senior Lecturer at the School of Architecture Planning and Geomatics of the University of Cape Town.
In the book Design/Disegno, Geometry Measure and Algorithm for architecture and the city, Ed Maggioli, (2018), I present a design method that uses digital and parametric technologies as a design tool for “dynamic” control of formal characters. I propose a virtual dialogue between the “revolution” that the discovery of perspective meant in terms of design process and contemporary design, focusing my attention on selected architects that are studied to highlight specific design issues. The key elements of this dialogue are mathematics and geometry as tools able to make a form readable, measurable, modifiable and thus designable. The dissertation, which is a reflection and an update of my Ph.D. Thesis, develops the relationship between abstract and concrete, visual and tactile, discrete and infinitesimal, the scene and the stage, as essential aspects of contemporary design.
In the conclusions I extend this method, as a still partially open question, to the urban and territorial dimension. I think it is possible and useful to combine the typological and geographical characteristics of a built environment as a driver for sustainable design. To do this, parametric design can be a useful tool to decode this complex data system.
In the autumn of 2018, I moved to West Bank where I have been involved in international cooperation projects for the implementation of social spaces in a refugee camp and where I have continued my researches.
At the beginning of 2020 I got back to Milan and I‘m serving as adjunct professor at the school of Architecture of the Politecnico di Milano (A.A. 2020-2021)
The following pages aim to explain in detail my research trajectory and its interconnection with teaching activity and professional practice.
1996-2001
During the years of study at the Faculty of Architecture of the Polytechnic of Milan (Now school of Architecture, Urban Planning and Construction Engineering) MF focuses on the research paths and interests that will frame the professional and academic profile. They are, in particular, the interest in the interconnection between the scales of a metropolitan territory, the relationship between representation and design processes and more generally the theories and techniques of architectural design.
The Erasmus study period at the Sint Lucas Institute in Brussels (1998-99) permitted MF to familiarize with an international environment and with projects that would have had an important impact in the following years. In particular, the study of Dutch architecture, from Berlage, to Team 10 / Structuralism up to the most recent designers (Rem Koolhaas in particular).
This experience was certainly an impetus for winning the university competition “Coceras de Metro de Quatro Caminos – Madrid” (with Stefano Melgrati) thanks to which he received a scholarship for a period of study at ETSAM – Madrid. The project concerned the relationship between architecture, infrastructure and the city and addressed, for the time, innovative aspects in relation to 3D design in a virtual environment.
The project was presented as a MArch dissertation (score 98/100 – April 2001) and its key elements were fundamental for accessing the Ph.D School in Architectural and Urban Design at Polimi. MF acquired the qualification for the profession of Architect, in the autumn of the same year.
2002-2008
After graduation, during the Military service MF started tutoring in architectural design studios at the Milan Polytechnic and, once the draft was over, the professional activity as free-lance architect. In 2003 MF was admitted to attend the Ph.D. Programme in Urban And Architectural Design • 18Th Cycle . The personal research path of those years was enriched by some particularly significant experiences such as a series of seminars offered to students of the PhD school on the relationship between architecture, infrastructure and landscape and on the relationship between contemporary art and architecture. MF joined the research group MSLAB (Measure and Scale of the contemporary city) coordinated by Prof Ernesto d’Alfonso and subsequently by Prof. Antonella Contin with whom, over the years he will collaborate on a regular basis.
In particular, as a member of this group, MF worked on the design of the urban expansion plan for Segovia_Las Lastras and gave his contribution to several publications. As a part of the Ph.D. Programme an important period of study and research was carried out at the New York Institute of Technology (2005).
From 2004 MF serves as contract (adjunct) professor at the Polytechnic of Milan collaborating with Prof. Antonella Contin. In these years the first itinerant workshops are offered to students in collaboration with international academic institutes. (Madrid, Istanbul, Sevilla, Cairo, New York …)
In 2005 the Municipality of Milan awarded him with a scholarship to support the Ph.D. Research.
During these years MF co-supervised several MArch final Dissertations. Specifically, he run an intensive workshop for students in preparation for their final project. In this context, in collaboration with others and with the University of Insubria, and inspired by the research of Frei Otto, the research group developed a software for the definition and heuristic optimization of spatial catenaries. The results of this experimentation was presented in international conferences and published in academic journals. The theoretical and technical issues that emerged in this context will be fundamental for the definition of the Ph.D. thesis which will be discussed with honours in 2007. Thesis title: Contemporary Architectural Designing Methods: Manual and Virtual Modeling. Geometrical Techniques of Shape Control.
The thesis perfects the body of research developed up to that moment and identifies specific paths for the future. In particular, the importance of mathematics and geometry as tools for mental measurement of form throughout the design process, the relationship between the tactile, the visual and the abstract dimension, and the dialogue between the scales of the contemporary metropolis where topography, urban fabrics and networks play a fundamental role.
Alongside the research activity, MF has been gaining professional experience working on projects at different scales, alone or in collaboration with others, and participating in several design competitions.
2009-2013
The professional practice continues to support teaching and research. MF develops projects at different scales dealing with exhibition, interior design, renovation of buildings in historical contexts, development plans and landscape/public spaces design.
In these years, a close collaboration with the municipality of Segrate has resulted in the design and realization of the museum/exhibition of the city’s history and in the consequent publication which collected the results of thorough research of historical documents.
The intense participation in international design competitions receives several awards. The topics addressed in these contests are almost always inherent to academic research, representing in some way and opportunity for verification and a motivation for further progress. In particular, the first prize for the design of the promenade of the Ravenna waterfront and the special mention for EUROPAN 2013 are highlighted.
The teaching activity at the Politecnico di Milano continues both within the Architectural design studios and as the lecturer in charge of the course: “Contemporary architectural design Methods”. Here the key concepts developed during the doctorate have been tested and verified in a didactic framework. The course, crafted for the last year of the MArch, combined theory and practice and invited the student to a critical reflection on architectural design as a logical, technical and artistic process.
In the same years, in collaboration with Prof. Contin, an interesting format for studio design workshops was developed thus allowing to strengthen international relations with several universities. The outcome of these experiences was published as monographs and in: Contin, Antonella, ed. Questo, Metropolitan Architecture. Bologna: Maggioli Editore, 2015.
In these years MF is supervisor of more than 20 final dissertations (including Bachelor and Masters Degree).
He founded, in collaboration with others and under the supervision of prof. Ernesto d’Alfonso the web magazine Arcduecittà (www.arcduecitta.it), with the aim of promoting the debate on architecture and design. Since then he is parto of the editorial staff.
2014 – 2020
In the summer of 2013 MF was selected for the position of Senior Lecturer at the School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics of the University of Cape Town. During this period he devoted himself mainly to teaching and research. The South African environment is rich in stimuli with particular regard to the relationship between society and urban space. In this new context MF teaches in the Bachelor of architectural studies, in the MArch (prof), in the Master of Urban design and in that of Landscape Architecture.
He teaches studio design and theory and history of architecture and urban design. For two years he supervises the students in the definition and development of the final dissertation (March Prof) while in the last year and a half he has dealt with the Master in Urban Design.
He also teached digital representation techniques to first-year students. This latter experience is a direct reflection of the research developed from the PhD thesis with particular regard to parametric design.
Over the years in Cape Town, MF consolidates, reorganizes, updates, and broadens the topics underlying the doctoral thesis. The outcome of this work is the book: Design Disegno – Geometry, Measure and Algorithm for Architecture and the City. Politecnica. Santarcangelo di Romagna (RN): Maggioli Editore, 2018.
The reflections covered in the book frame parametric design in the wake of humanistic culture (symbolic form). In this context, a design method is proposed that finds a dialogue between the tactile, the visual, and the abstract (geometric) dimension for the design of contemporary space.
Once this experience was completed, MF moved to the Middle East and between the autumn of 2018 and the beginning of 2020 he has lived between Ramallah and Jerusalem. After the curation of the digital edition of the book Design-Disegno, He had the opportunity to contribute to an urban regeneration project for a Palestinian refugee camp. The project was founded by EU and implemented by an Italian NGO. During this period he deepened his research on design techniques and participate in design competitions (Rome Olympic village: project selected for the second phase).
Back to Milan in the beginning of 2020 MF teaches as Adjunct Professor at the School of Architecture of the Politecnico di Milano (from A.A. 2020-2021)
